Biography...
Cindy C. Oxberry has over 20 years experience in the opera world. After a successful career as a singer, Ms. Oxberry decided to parlay her experience into directing and mentoring young performers. Her passion is opera education, whether it be working with young singers on the verge of a professional career or young children just learning about the art form.
For the past 15 summers, she has worked for The Institute for Young Singers and Camp for Kids at the education department of the Washington National Opera as a stage director, mentor, and instructor. A highlight, during her career of directing children, was to have the opportunity to direct a full production of Brundibar for the Camp for Kids. To further her work, Ms. Oxberry received a education grant from the Kennedy Center to do an opera scenes program and a semester of an acting classes for singers at the Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts. She also works at the Baltimore School for Performing Arts as a director for their opera scenes program and does frequent master classes. She has directed Green Eggs and Ham for the Opera Fairbanks Youth Program, where she applied for and received a grant from the state of Alaska to create a successful in-school program that brought students from different grade levels together to create a fully produced opera.
Ms. Oxberry enjoys working with singers on their way to a professional career. This summer she will return to the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival where she is an artist in residence for their Voice/Opera/Musical Theater division. A frequent giver of master classes, she has worked with young artists through Los Angeles Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Baldwin Wallace College, the Baltimore School for the Performing Arts, and the Catholic University of America.
Ms. Oxberry made her official directorial debut with a production of The Face on the Barroom Floor at Opera North in 1995. More recently, Ms. Oxberry made her Indianapolis Opera debut with the Maurice Sendak Hansel and Gretel. Other recent productions include Orpheus in the Underworld at Baldwin Wallace College, Cosi Fan Tutte for the Catholic University of America, The Mikado for the Savoyards of DC, and Il Trovatore for State Repertory Theatre of New Jersey. She has also directed Lucia di Lammermoor (original production Marthe Keller) and La Traviata (original production Marta Domingo) at the Los Angeles Opera.
Ms. Oxberry has an impressive resume as an assistant director having worked for Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Royal Opera, while assisting renowned directors Paul Curran, Francesca Zambello, Stephen Lawless, Emilio Sagi, Marta Domingo, Frank Cosaro, Leon Majors, Lotfi Mansouri, and Mariusz Trelinski to name a few.
Ms. Oxberry is a native of New York and earned her Bachelors degree in Opera Theater at the Hartt School and her Master’s degree in Voice from the Manhattan School of Music. After college, Ms. Oxberry pursued a career in the performing arts as a professional singer. She sang a diversity of roles with such companies as New York City Opera, Texas Opera Theater, Chautauqua Opera, Opera Omaha, Central City Opera, Skylight Comic Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, New Jersey Opera Association, and the Connecticut Opera Association.
